Dinara Assignment 2 Tutor report

Overall Comments

You submitted two draft photo films, both of which were more than satisfactory. Good progress is being made, and your extensive work behind the scenes is paying off.

Assessment potential

Assignment 2 and 4 Assessment potential

I understand your aim is to go for the Photography/Creative Arts* Degree and that you plan to submit your work for assessment at the end of this course. From the work you have shown in this assignment, providing you commit yourself to the course, I believe you have the potential to pass at assessment. In order to meet all the assessment criteria, there are certain areas you will need to focus on, which I will outline in my feedback.

Notes from, and in addition to, our Skype tutorial –

We discussed both submitted films and agreed that the shorter film with sound excerpts and captioned conversation worked best. There is power in the texts in the other film its just that the subtitled film flowed better and, perhaps crucially, is more likely to meet audience expectations.

We worked through an idea to create these photo-films as chapters that worked in sequence, roughly; background/upbringing, current life and the future.

The incorporation of vernacular family images worked well. Something really good could be made of the embroidery photographs.

I particularly like the Russian voiceover (as I did in your previous work), I mentioned that Cyrillic text could also be used to effect.

We discussed the issues you have experienced with subjects, how much time to invest, and approaches to working with subjects. You are planning to have a diverse selection of subjects in terms of age and gender.

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity

The production values of the films are good quality as expected, the captions look professional, the timings and effects subtle. The images themselves are of good quality

reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis

A fantastic amount of research here, and good to see you responding to references that came up in previous conversations. I mentioned that the photo-film is now seen by photo editors as a useful way to monetise photography – particularly documentary. As this is the audience area you are aiming for it is well worth the effort researching the New York Times’ slideshows as well as those of other news and media outlets.

Learning Log

reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis

Your extensive log is well laid out and easy to read, and as mentioned, very thorough.

Suggested reading/viewing

Definitely worth finding out the timing lengths, audio/visual mix, subject matter and other contextual information on disseminated similar to yours.

Pointers for the next assignment / assessment

Aiming for the full sequence, probably of Dinara, plus preliminary work of other subjects.
